Abstract
A new synergistic hemolytic phenomenon between Staphylococcus aureus ¥á-toxin and the streptococcal factor on sheep blood agar was described, Of 16 isolates of group A streptococci all gave a "crescent shaped" synergistic hemolytic zones, whereas most strains of group B and G streptococci elicited "arrowhead-shaped" or "helmet-shaped" synergistic hemolytic zones. However, none of the group C streptococci showed such a synergism. On human blood agar, of 16 strains of group A streptococci 14(87.5%) gave the "crescent-shaped" synergistic reactions, while none of the group B, C and G streptococci gave the synergistic phenomenon. The sensitivity and intensity of the synergistic hemolytic reaction between group A streptococcal factor and S. aureus ¥á-toxin was highest when tested on sheep blood agar medium. This new synergistic hemolysis reaction, using an ¥á-toxin-producing S. aureus and defibrinated sheep blood agar, would provide a simple and reproducible screening test for rapid differentiation of group A streptococci from other groups of ¥â-hemolytic streptococci.
